FAQs

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR BEGINNING CLASSES?

There are 2 ways to register: online or by phone. You may also email for more information at swimbabesportland@gmail.com.  You may find our upcoming courses on the Lesson Schedule Page. Most of our courses are updated regularly but occasionally there are openings that are available that are not listed on the website. Please call 503-786-6250 for further information.

HOW LONG ARE YOUR SESSIONS?

Our beginning courses: Basic Water Awareness and SynchroBabies™ and SynchroTots classes last from 8-12 weeks.   When your child has completed a beginning course, you and your instructor make the decision whether your baby is ready to be invited into the perpetual program starting with beginning survival.   We also occasionally offer beginning survival courses for ages 22m-3 years (6 month commitment) aged children who have no water experience and whose parents are committed to the survival process from the start.  After the 6 month course, students move into our perpetual student population.

Ages 4 and older generally start in a beginning survival program and then are invited in to the perpetual program.

Perpetual lessons run February-November.

WHAT IS AN “Perpetual” STUDENT? (ongoing)

A perpetual student is a student who has completed a Beginning Course in either Basic Water Awareness or SynchroBabies™ and registers for 2x/week classes.
(1x/week classes are allowed for ages 2 and older swimmers and those children who have mastered a 5 minute fully clothed test).

Once your child is an Perpetual Student, he or she will be in our classes and continue to progress through our levels until you give us notice by the 15th of the month PRIOR to dropping,  in writing via email that you will not be continuing.

SWIMBABES™ season runs February-November each year with a 2 month break for the Holidays.
Swimmers enrolled in November are automatically re enrolled in the same times and days when we re open in February that they were enrolled in during November.

HOW DO I PAY FOR BEGINNING LESSONS?

The easiest way to register is online.  Go our our online registration page, choose the course you want to register for and pay online. You may also call and speak with one of our office assistants and they are very happy to get you registered.
Call us at 503-786-6250

HOW MUCH ARE LESSONS?

Lessons start at $150.000 for an 8 week session.
Weekly Ongoing Lessons start as low as $95.00 per month (on a 3 month pre paid enrollment)

ARE THESE LESSONS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHER LESSONS?

If you compare skill to skill what is taught and the amount of time it takes to teach, our lessons are 50-60% less expensive than other swimming lessons.
However, up front sometimes people do not understand the difference in methodologies in teaching swimming to babies, toddlers and preschoolers and try to compare our pricing to other swimming centers as if they were comparing the exact same things. Survival Training just cannot be compared in the same vein as other traditional swimming lessons.

WHY IS SWIM SURVIVAL SO SPECIALIZED?

Swim Survival Safety™ is a specialty field in the swimming lesson world. There are just a handful of instructors across the United States who possess the knowledge, skills and expertise and have spent the time training to teach little ones, including tiny babies survival skills in the water. We have some of the most experienced teachers in the United States and even World wide working  your baby or child.

DO YOU OFFER MAKE UPS?

Due to our limited class sizes, we do not offer make ups, refunds or credits for classes that are in session that a student misses.
However, for those enrolled in 3 month perpetual lesson enrollments, gift lessons are offered and can be used to take extra classes for those you missed.

IF I PULL MY CHILD FROM LESSONS, HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO RE-ENROLL IN CLASSES?

When you choose to pull out of lessons, that spot is now available to other students to register in.
We will do our best to work with your schedule and your requests for teachers but we cannot guarantee that there will be a spot for you when you return.
If you are not able to be flexible with your day, time, and teacher of choice then we suggest you stay in lessons even if you are going to miss a few classes.
Throughout the year, those few lessons that you may miss will not hinder your child learning to swim as much as pulling out of lessons all together would. Please note if you do choose to pull your child from lessons, a written note  is required no later than the 15th of the month PRIOR to the payment period you want to discontinue lessons.

IF I PULL MY CHILD FROM CLASSES WILL HE OR SHE FORGET WHAT SHE LEARNED?

That depends. It will depend on your consistency as a parent to swim with your child weekly and your ability to work with him yourself. It will also depend on how long the child has been swimming. Most children will do more for a teacher than they will for their parent. The teacher is also trained in progressions to move your child forward in skill and correct things that your child may be doing incorrectly. It goes without saying that the children who swim with us season round are better skilled and far more confident than those whose parents pull them in and our of lessons or only take lessons for a short period of time. Taking lessons as a baby and having skills will not ensure that the same child at age 2 will still remember those skills if not practiced weekly. Most children who pull from lessons may have to repeat previous courses or levels when they return.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD IS PLACED IN A CLASS WHERE HE IS NOT QUITE AS ADVANCED AS THE OTHER CHILDREN OR IN A CLASS WHERE HE IS MORE SKILLED THAN OTHER CHILDREN?

Because we work so closely with your child over a long period of time, we know what skills your child should be doing in order to get placed in a specific level or class. All of our teachers have been trained to split teach levels (meaning some classes may be a blend of two similar levels or various skills). We are very flexible in working with each child’s individual strengths and weaknesses within each level. We are also constantly evaluating the students and making adjustments to levels if they are above or below the goals. Class Level names are changed as soon as the majority of children in that class advance beyond the skills required for that level.  Classes generally tend to stay together and progress together over a long period of time. And, of course if your child is far behind or ahead of the rest of the class and we see it as an impediment to progress, we will make alterations to his or her class time.

WHAT IF I NEED TO CHANGE MY DAY OR TIME ?

You may change your day or time by talking to our office staff at 503-786-6250 or emailing swimbabesportland@gmail.com
If no spot is immediately available we will do our best to make the changes as soon as openings become available in our schedule. In addition, please feel free to check back with us as often as you would like for your preferred class time.

DO I NEED TO CHANGE CLASSES WHEN MY CHILD CHANGES LEVELS?

Classes tend to progress together. If this is not the case, we will speak to you about looking for a class more appropriate for your child.

WHAT IF MY CLASS DROPS TO ONLY 1 or 2 STUDENTS?

If a group class has only one or two students, as always, we do reserve the right to consolidate that class or cancel the class altogether. In a case where your class has to be canceled (we work very hard for this not to happen, but with our flexible pay schedule, it occasionally happens this way.), we will offer you another class choice or refund your $$ if we cannot find a class space that will work for your schedule.

MY BABY FINISHED SYNCHROBABIES™, SYNCHROTOTS or BASIC WATER AWARENESS, WHAT COURSE IS NEXT?

When your baby has successfully completed SynchroBabies™ , SynchroTots or Basic Water Awareness, your instructor will invite you and your  baby into joining beginning survival classes in our Perpetual Lesson Program.  You will be enrolled on a 2x/week basis as an “Perpetual Student” (see above). Your baby must stay in 2x/week lessons until he/she can turn over and float fully clothed for 5 minutes.. However, while we give the once a week option once your baby can turn your baby has won a 5 minute fully clothed award, we do not recommend once a week for babies under age 2. Time and experience has proven that babies who swim 2x/week through their 2nd year of life are far better swimmers and enjoy the lessons far more and are far better swimmers than babies who swim 1 day a week.  That being said, we do offer 1 day per week survival when time slots available for ages 2 and older.

MY BABY FINISHED SYNCHROBABIES™ SYNCHROTOTS OR BASIC WATER AWARENESS, BUT SHE IS NOT READY FOR SURVIVAL.

Your instructor will recommend if your baby is ready to move to survival or not.  Those babies not ready may repeat the SynchroBabies,  (if still young enough) Tots, or Basic Water Awareness.

WHY DO YOU PROMOTE YEAR ROUND LESSONS AT YOUR SWIMMING SCHOOL?

We believe in year round swimming lessons because we believe young children, particularly those under age 5, need consistency in water safety skills as they grow. Each month of growth and development in the first 5 years of life can alter and change as a child’s body size changes and this can affect their skill in the water. And, frankly, the more skilled a student is, the safer they are in the water. Students who drop in and out of lessons may not see the astounding results that we are so well known for at our swimming school. Our goal is to eliminate the mentality of seasonal swim lessons because this approach usually requires a “restart” button for the child each and every year. Our experience is that seasonal swimmers are not as strong, skilled or as confident as our year round swimmers. And, confidence and skill in the water is something a young child must gain and sustain over a period of time in order to be safe in the water.
